SMC and HTEC Join Forces for Tech Company Accelerator

Sutter’s Mill Capital and High Tech Engineering Center Enter Agreement to Develop Innovation and Acceleration Platform for Early Stage High Tech Companies in US

Los Angeles, CA and Belgrade, Serbia - Sutter’s Mill Capital (SMC), a venture capital advisory and merchant banking firm, and High Tech Engineering Center (HTEC), a hardware and software engineering services company, have signed and agreed to develop an acceleration and development platform for high tech companies. The companies will combine their expertise in corporate and product development to assist venture backed companies and aspiring growth companies in developing and commercializing marketable products, in addition to identifying high potential early stage technology teams for more comprehensive acceleration and incubation.

SMC is located in Los Angeles, CA, and is uniquely suited to identify and screen potential companies for development from some of the major innovation centers in the Western US. SMC has a unique focus and expertise in global commercialization strategies as well as corporate development and M&A work for technology companies in the consumer device, software, internet, medical device, and cleantech, security, mobile, and new media sectors. SMC has a unique platform for selecting companies which uses a proprietary venture data and analytics software suite to provide insight into markets and identify trends, gaps, and syndication resources for follow on investments. In addition, SMC add value through corporate development and strategy work, as well as identifying corporate legal resources for structuring and general company counsel.

HTEC’s expertise covers a full spectrum of IT services, from customized software, desktop, web and mobile applications to development of sophisticated hardware solutions, embedded systems and signal processing algorithms. HTEC provides a complete service solution in specifying, developing, maintaining, redesigning and integrating both hardware and software products. The company has a track record of developing software and hardware applications in various industries like entertainment, internet gaming, social networking, banking/finance, telemedicine medical devices, security, automation and consumer electronics. Clients in the past have included Fortune 500 companies such as Intel, Phillips, and SAP, in addition to early stage companies globally.

The partnership will leverage SMC’s US network of connections and corporate development capabilities to identify venture backed and corporate clients for HTEC services, in addition to sourcing and screening companies for incubation and acceleration. HTEC’s best in class engineering services are uniquely positioned and suited to assist venture backed companies, and their experience with startups allows them to help the early stage company deliver compellingly engineered products, minimum viable products (MVPs) and prototypes.. HTEC’s has deep experience with startups and lean startup methodology. HTEC’s skills at the lean methodology allow a transfer of these skills and for HTEC to add value as a technology partner in the startup company with the ability to scale resources when needed.

Nathan Joyner, founder of Sutter’s Mill Capital commented, “There is a market need for developing companies in the hardware and software sector where there is intelligence into capital markets, and resources to show proof of concept and marketable products. In recent years the VC market has shied away from seed investing in many hardware and complex software based companies, and there have been movements from various corporate VCs to address this trend. We see this partnership as being an alternative to promising companies in large markets that need additional resources to attract the capital and strategic resources required to scale.”

Andrija Bednarik, Managing Partner of HTEC added “ Many of our clients are startups which engage our company as a trusted technology development partner which can understand their problems and help them to quickly test their concepts and rapidly develop high quality final products. The reason why they engage our company at first is because of the cost reduction, great scaling capacity, and ability to efficiently manage tech demanding projects and deliver on daily basis. But very soon they realize they get more than that. It’s because we think of ourselves as the partners of the startup and we are always eager to provide a feedback about the new ideas and the features which are ought to be built. It’s about building trust and providing the value from the start till the end of each and every engagement.”

Nathan Joyner to Chair Venture Capital Panel at IEEE Globecom 2012 in Anaheim CA

Nathan Joyner of Sutter’s Mill Capital agreed to support the IEEE Globecom conference in Anaheim California Dec 3-7 in Anaheim, CA. Mr. Joyner will chair 2 panel discussions at the upcoming conference. Plans for the discussions include one panel of venture and corporate dealmakers discussing  investment trends in the communications sector, and another panel will have investors and entrepreneurs discussing entrepreneurial business models and monetizing  intellectual property (IP) based businesses. The IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) is the annual flagship conference of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), and the premier telecommunications event for industry professionals, academics, companies and government agencies from around the world. The conference’s global reach draws experts from around the world to highlight the technology trends and research in the communications field. The panels chaired by Mr. Joyner will include active institutional and corporate investors and business leaders that will give their viewpoints on these topics to the audience.

“We hope to bring a discussion to the event that will highlight some of the commercialization and investment trends in the industry,” says Nathan Joyner. “My experience has been that many technologists spend a large amount of their time in developing a technology, and less time tracking and relating investment and economic trends to their efforts in conceptualizing an overall business development strategy. Much as the public markets have, the private markets have also have some choppiness, and private investment focus has changed to adapt to the global business environment. These panels will address some of these issues from technology investment professionals and cover some of the recent investment trends and themes in the sector for the audience.”

The GLOBECOM conference will be held from Dec. 3-7, 2012 in Anaheim, CA. For more information on the  conference, see the conference web site at:  http://www.ieee-globecom.org/
